White-throated Toucan, Ramphastos tucanus. Drawn from a captive bird at a bird-park.
Let us assume that you have been successful so far and you have some basic shapes and postures. Then you should turn your attention to the feather groups and their relationship to each other. Look for the comparative lengths of the different feather groups of the wing – they can vary greatly between species.
Because you are drawing from a captive bird, you have time to check details of eye position, bill, gape, feet, and so on and to make colour notes (e.g. see pp. 46, 48–50). This is not so easy in the field.
